On March 21, 2019, after more than 4 years of weekly meeting at the Cebu Waterfront Hotel & Casino, Rotary Club of Cebu unveiled the “Rotary Meets Here” plaque at a prominent location by the entrance of the hotel. The day started with an important meeting with PDG Bruce Allen, RI International in Parramatta, RISPPO (RI South Pacific and Philippines) Manager. He was accompanied by DG Bing Garcia and RI Fundraising Development Specialist, Gretchen Laurel. First stop of the day was a courtesy call at Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center, where our Gift of Life VTT visits are undertaken. PDG Bruce and DG Bing had the opportunity to meet the hospital CEO & Medical Center Chief II, Dr. Gerardo Aquino and his team of pediatric surgeons, doctors, pulmonary specialists and nurses who have partnered with us. It was a pleasant meeting with ideas and hopes exchanged for the long terms success of our Gift of Life program. DG Bing was surprised to find out that he and the doctor has gone to the same high school in Zamboanga and his cousin was a good friend of Dr. Aquino! What a small world indeed. After a quick tour of the hospital facilities, we escorted PDG Bruce to one of the club’s flagship project, The Community Scouts Youth and Guidance Center. On hand to welcome us was PP Rene Kintanar who founded the center and is considered a father by many of the kids who live in the facility. He gave a brief talk on the birth of Community Scouts and how the center continues to carry this name since its founding. We had to opportunity to observe a class in progress, visit their living quarters, their music room, and expansive library with shelves fashioned from shipping crates. From Community Scouts, we invited our guests to join our weekly luncheon meeting where they were joined by DGE Phillip Tan. All were warmly welcomed by our club members. Also in our midst was Club Secretary Arnel Robles of RC Koronadal who was in town to accompany a patient with congenital heart defect undergoing screening for our next VTT visit. Pres. Stephen walked PDG Bruce through the activities and performance of RCC via a slide show presentation. DG Bing spoke to the club and shared to all how inspired he was by the significant contribution of RCC to the entire District, how honored he was that under his term, the District have once again proven that there are no limits to what we can do if we strive for it. As our guest speaker, PDG Bruce exhorted us to continue to pursue excellence in all that we do and to not lose sight of who will benefit from all our work – those who lack education, suffer from poor health and live in poverty. He also gave us a snapshot of his office and staff and how we can rely on them to support our endeavors. After his inspiring talk, our guests were invited to the floor to take part in handing out recognition pins to our newest Paul Harris Fellows, as well as PH +3, PH + 6 and Major Donor Level 6 members. It was a fortuitous occasion that the recognition to our members were done in the presence of those who represent our District and Region. The eventful morning and noon came to a fitting end as Pres. Stephen Chian and DG Bing Garcia lead our guests and club members to jointly unveil our marker to declare Cebu Waterfront Hotel and Casino as our second home. Where fellowship is fostered, plans are drawn, ideas are planted, calls to action are made, because this is how we are.
